Pseudomonos flourescens aggressively colonises both the roots (when applied to the soil) and leaf areas (when applied as a foliar spray) and triggers induced systemic resistance in plant, making them more resilient to soil-borne and foliar diseases.

The bacteria protect plants from infection by pathogens by producing secondary metabolites and keep other pathogens at bay by competitive exclusion due to their rapid colonisation of the rhizosphere. This provides important support in disease control.

Antibiotics such as pyrrolnitrin, pyoluteorin, and 2,4-diacetylphloroglucinol that inhibit phyto-pathogen growth are produced by Pseudomonas fluorescens.

Pseudomonas fluorescens produces hydrogen cyanide and the siderophores pyocheline and pyoverdine which it uses to outcompete with many pathogenic bacteria for iron necessary for growth and suppress pathogens in the rhizosphere.

Pseudomonas fluorescens is also increasingly recognised as a natural frost damage preventative. A large portion of damage noted to be caused by frost, is actually not icing or the cold temperatures itself causing the damage but bacteria living on the plants’ surface. These bacteria release a protein which causes the damage to the plant during periods where the temperature drops drastically. These “bad” bacteria are ice-nucleating bacteria, like Pseudomonas syringae, whereas Pseudomonas fluorescens is non-ice nucleating. Pseudomonas fluorescens, when applied as a foliar spray, colonises the plants surfaces and out-competes these “bad” bacteria, removing it from the plants surface, inferring frost resistance.

Chemical Stability: Stable under normal temperatures.
